DESCRIPTION:\nLeah Rawls Atkins will speak at the Jan. 10 meeting of the Le
 eds Historical Society. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at the Leeds Hist
 oric Depot\, 8335 Thornton Ave. Admission is free\, and the public is invi
 ted.\n\nShe will speak about the importance of local history and how it fi
 ts into county and state history. \n\nAtkins is a native of Birmingham and
  holds a Ph.D. in history from Auburn University. She taught history at Au
 burn\, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Samford University. She
  retired from Auburn University in 1995 as director emerita of the Carolin
 e Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities. \n       \nShe has w
 ritten numerous books about Alabama state and local history\, especially c
 orporate history. She wrote The Valley and the Hills: An Illustrated Histo
 ry of Birmingham and Jefferson County in 1981 and is a co-author of the aw
 ard-winning Alabama: The History of a Deep South State published by the Un
 iversity of Alabama Press in 1994\, with a new updated edition due in 2010
 . Her history “Developed for the Service of Alabama”: The Centennial Histo
 ry of the Alabama Power Company\, 1906-2006 won the James F. Sulzby Jr. Aw
 ard for the best book on Alabama history published in 2006. She has also w
 ritten corporate histories of Brasfield & Gorrie\, a Birmingham-based cons
 truction company\, and John M. Harbert III and the Harbert Co.\n      \nAt
 kins was a competitive water skier from 1950 to 1958\, training on the Bla
 ck Warrior River north of Lock 17.  As a former World and U.S. National Wa
 ter Ski Champion\, in 1976 she was the first woman inducted into the Alaba
 ma Sports Hall of Fame.\n      \nThe Leeds Historical Society\, a nonprofi
 t organization founded in 1998\, meets on the second Sunday of each month.
